The stage is a laboratory for observing people. How do you get ahold of what's real to your characters? Reading each other's work, we'll explore how character conflict drives a play. We'll talk about craft and do an exercise or two.

Whether you have an idea for a play, are deep into the middle of one, or have never written a play before—this workshop is a place to work and grow in your understanding of the craft. No experience necessary.

  • No one will be turned away for inability to pay. A $50 discount option is available for those unable to offer the full donation. For further scholarship options, please contact us.

Peter Littlefield is a stage director, playwright and dramaturg. His career has ranged from the New York City downtown, where he helped start the Pyramid Club, to opera companies in the United States and Europe. With Christopher Alden, he co-directed his adaptation of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan for the Fisher Center at Bard and Handel's Partenope for the English National Opera, winning the Laurence Olivier Award. His work has appeared at New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, San Francisco Opera, Theater Basil, Prague National Theater among others. On May 19, his production, “Dogtown Common," will return to  Windhover as part of the Gloucester 400+. And on June 16, the Gloucester Writers Center will screen his film trilogy, What she learned from plants, directed by Roy Rallo. He teaches playwriting at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and studied with Maria Irene Fornes.
