Everyone knows about portrait paintings and photographic portraits—but what about portraits in words?

In visual arts, great portraits do more than record a likeness; they tell us about their subjects. In this 3-session workshop, we’ll explore techniques for creating a written portrait: a piece of writing about a real person that moves beyond description and biography to get at something deeper about the subject.

Think of a real person—someone you know or knew, or another notable figure, past or present. They will be your subject. Through readings and discussion, in-class exercises, and group critique of our own drafts, we will experiment and expand our abilities to describe and depict individuals.  After three sessions, expect to complete a short piece of portrait writing…or have a solid start at a longer work!
